Silver Layer: Normalized Foundation This is where chaos became order. Different date formats? Unified. Inconsistent naming? Standardized. The key principle: no business logic yet, just structural harmonization. This made the data model reusable across multiple use cases - production reporting, inventory management, supply chain optimization.
Gold Layer: Business Intelligence Here's where the magic happened. Business rules applied, aggregations calculated, user-friendly names assigned. This layer spoke the language of the business, not the database. It was curated, validated, and ready for analysis.
Behind the scenes, Azure Synapse orchestrated a carefully timed dance. Remember, each plant operated on a 6 AM to 6 AM cycle in their local time zone. Data had to be pulled after 6 AM local time for each plant and reports refreshed by 8 AM local time. That meant multiple two-hour windows across time zones, all running in parallel, with hundreds of data points flowing in at different times.
The system had to be smart about dependencies: you can't calculate OEE until you have all three components. You can't compare plan to actual until both datasets are loaded. The orchestration ensured everything happened in the right sequence, with proper error handling and retry logic.
After implementation, the plant manager's morning routine transformed dramatically they were finally able to drink their coffee hot. They opened their browser, and the reports were already there, refreshed and waiting. Every single day. No hunting, no coordinating, no Excel wrangling.
